Message from the Principals
Ms. Amy O'Brien, Principal
Mr. John Coppola, Assistant Principal
Good afternoon Families and Mead School Staff,
We hope you truly enjoyed your vacation. I wanted to take this time to update you on some very important events approaching quickly.
We are very excited for our second family fun night that is happening next Friday, April 27th from 6-8. We hope all of you can attend. We will be raffling off gift baskets as prizes for participation. This is a completely free event, sponsored by the Mead Parent Teacher Group's fundraisers, so please just come, play some games, create art, have some pizza and ice cream and enjoy our Mead School community.
Our Field Days- organized by PE teacher, Mr. Howes are also fast approaching. There is still time to order t-shirts online, but we can no longer take orders at school. The online store will remain open until midnight on Friday the 20th. Here is the link: https://meadfieldday.itemorder.com/
All of our Field Days will take place at the Ansonia Nature Center. The dates are as follows: May 25th, Grades PK, K and 1. June 5th, Grades 2,3 and 4. and June 6th, Grades 5 and 6. Rain dates are May 31, June 13 and June 14th respectively.
During the month of May our students in grades 3-6 will be showing all they have learned this year when they participate in the yearly Smarter Balanced Assessments. Our testing at Mead School will begin the week of May 7th. You will be receiving more detailed information soon.
This is also the time of the year teachers will be scheduling class field trips. Since our last day of school is currently Monday, June 18th, most of our class trips will take place at the end of May and in June. Please be on the look out for this information from the classroom teachers.
On Tuesday evening, April 24th at 6pm the Ansonia Board of Alderman will be meeting to discuss the Ansonia Public School Budget at City Hall. There have been drastic cuts to our school in the past and a zero increase in funds will dramatically impact current programs and staff at all of the schools. As you know at Mead School we only have Music and Life Skills for half of the year and our Science Lab class was cut last year as well. For the last 2 years we haven't had a library clerk to run our Media Center. These cuts were a result of zero or minimal increases to our budget over the last few years. You are also aware that one of our secretaries was also cut to half time which has caused a longer wait time in the office to answer the phones and assist parents and students. This past year, 2 Kindergarten classrooms at the other elementary school were eliminated due to a limited budget. This ripple effect caused our Kindergarten classrooms to be overcrowded this year with up to 25 students in a classroom. Without an increase, this will remain next year as well. Our Board of Education did the best they could with what they had and our teachers and administrators work long hours to be sure our students needs are met. If we do not get an increase, more will have to be cut and we won't see the return of previously cut positions. If you can find the time in your busy schedule to attend this meeting to show your support for an increase it would be appreciated by many. If you would like to speak or write a letter, there is usually a public session at the beginning of the meeting.
As always the Mead School administration, teachers, secretaries, paraprofessionals, food service staff, instructional assistants, aides and custodians will work hard and dedicate our time to your children so they succeed and thrive here at Mead School no matter the outcome of this budget season.
We hope you enjoyed your time with your children, family and friends during this April vacation. We hope to see you all for our Family Fun Night on Friday, April 27th. It is sure to be a good time. :)
